The 5 Lumira reading levels, from first sounds to fluent reading

Reading develops in a predictable order. A child does not move from recognising letters straight to reading fluently — there are stages, and skipping one is what produces a reader who guesses. These five levels follow that progression, and each lists the frameworks it is drawn from.

• 1. Early Sounds

  Ages 3-5 — Stage 0: Prereading

• 2. First Words

  Ages 5-6 — Stage 1 (early): Initial reading and decoding

• 3. Building Fluency

  Ages 6-7 — Stage 1 (late): Confirmation of decoding

• 4. Advanced Decoding

  Ages 7-11 — Stage 2: Confirmation and Fluency

• 5. Fluent Reader

  Ages 8+ — Stage 3: Reading to Learn
