What makes a book decodable?

A decodable book restricts itself to letter-sound patterns the reader has already been taught, so decoding succeeds instead of collapsing into guessing. That is the opposite of a levelled reader, which controls vocabulary and sentence length but leaves the child to infer unfamiliar spellings from pictures or context — the single habit that most holds back a reader with dyslexia.
